The study, carried out by researchers at Yakin Dogu Universitesi and Ataturk Ogretmen Akademisi, explored the influence of music on 344 athletes—169 women and 175 men—who regularly participate in international competitions. The goal was to understand how music affects athletes not only physically but also mentally, with a particular focus on resilience and motivation, two qualities essential for sporting success.

Researchers used a quantitative survey model and gathered data through specially designed scales such as the Impact of Music in Sportive Activities Scale (IMSAS). The results provide compelling evidence that music is not just background noise—it is a powerful psychological tool that supports athletes at different stages of their sporting activities.

Gender and Experience Shape the Impact

One of the most striking findings of the research is how the effects of music vary across gender and years of sports experience. For instance, significant differences were found between men and women in terms of physical performance and psychological resilience. Women showed more noticeable improvements in resilience and motivation when exposed to music before, during, and after their activities.

The study also revealed that athletes with more years of experience benefitted differently from music compared to those newer to sports. Experienced athletes, for example, reported higher boosts in motivation and physical strength during pre-activity and mid-activity phases, while psychological resilience showed the strongest improvement after training or competition.

The Timing of Music Matters

Interestingly, the stage at which athletes listened to music played a critical role in how it affected them. During the pre-activity phase, music significantly increased motivation, strength, and resilience—helping athletes gear up for performance. While listening during activity, the most profound impact was seen in motivation and strength, giving athletes the drive to push harder. After activity, music continued to play a restorative role, particularly in improving psychological resilience and aiding recovery.

However, when it came to the type of sport, no major differences were observed. Whether an athlete competed in team sports or individual disciplines, music’s impact remained equally powerful, proving that its effects are universal across sporting categories.

Sports are not only about physical ability but also about mental toughness. The mental health of athletes is often challenged by pressure, competition, and performance expectations. This study emphasizes that music can serve as a simple yet effective tool to support athletes in coping with stress, building resilience, and improving their performance.
